Originality.ai Alternatives

Every Originality.ai alternatives list on page one is by a rival ranking itself first. Same-sample test scores and live prices for the four worth switching to.

Do You Need an Originality.ai Alternative?

I'd switch away from Originality.ai for one of three reasons: you want AI and plagiarism checks in one scan for less money, your school already pays for Turnitin, or you only check a document now and then. Originality.ai charges credits per 100 words, and running its plagiarism check doubles the credit cost of every scan.

One common reason to leave doesn't hold up anymore. Several comparison lists say Originality.ai has no free plan. I checked its pricing page on 16 September 2026, and it shows a free Basic plan with 3 scans a day. If occasional free checks are all you need, that plan covers you without a switch.

How I Chose What to Trust Here

Most "Originality.ai alternatives" lists on Google's first page are published by companies selling a competing detector, and most of them rank their own product first. Leap AI sells a detector with a bundled humanizer and puts itself at #1. GPTZero sells a detector and ranks itself #1 in its own list of nine. Skyline Academic sells tutoring with a free detector attached and ranks itself #2, at least disclosing the connection openly.

That's why I leaned on Pangram's published test data for the actual scores rather than trusting any list's own rankings or "best for" labels. Pangram sells a competing detector too, and its own tool scored a perfect 12 out of 12 in that same test, so it isn't neutral either. But its methodology was transparent: it ran identical samples through every tool and published every result, including scores that made rivals look good. That's a stronger signal than a company simply ranking its own product first, even from a source with its own stake in the answer. I'd treat the rankings and "best for" labels elsewhere with the most skepticism.

What Originality.ai Actually Offers Now

Originality.ai has a free Basic plan: 3 scans a day, up to 2,000 words per scan, AI detection only, no subscription. Leap AI's list calls Originality.ai "paid-only," which contradicts what I found on the live pricing page.

The paid plans, as I found them listed on 16 September 2026:

  • Pro: $12.95 a month billed annually, 2,000 credits a month (1 credit = 100 words)
  • Enterprise: $136.58 a month billed annually, 15,000 credits a month, API access and 365-day scan history

I cover Originality.ai's accuracy, and the gap between its own claims and independent tests, in full in my Originality.ai review. This page assumes you've already decided to look elsewhere.

How the Alternatives Scored on the Same Samples

In Pangram's January 2026 test, Copyleaks was the only alternative to pass all 12 samples: 9 of 9 AI texts and 3 of 3 human texts. Pangram generated about 1,000 words each from ChatGPT-4o, Gemini 2.0 and Claude 3.7 Sonnet (3 samples per model), plus 3 human texts. An AI text passed only when the tool rated it at least 75% AI.

DetectorAI texts caughtHuman texts clearedNote
Copyleaks9/93/3Only perfect score besides Pangram itself
Originality.ai7/93/3Tested on the free tier
GPTZero7/93/3
ZeroGPT6/91/3Flagged 2 human texts as AI
QuillBot4/93/3
Undetectable AI4/93/3Mainly sells an AI humanizer
Winston AI3/3 (ChatGPT only)Not testedTrial credits ran out
TurnitinNot testedNot testedInstitutional access only

Three things stood out to me. Originality.ai and GPTZero scored identically, so switching between those two gains nothing on accuracy by this measure. ZeroGPT, the most common free suggestion, was the only tool here that wrongly flagged human writing. And 12 samples is a small test, so I'd treat a one-sample difference as noise.

I cover the full 30-tool field, framed around being wrongly flagged, in my GPTZero alternatives page.

Prices, Checked Live

For combined AI and plagiarism checking, Copyleaks Personal is the cheapest paid option here: $13.99 a month billed annually for up to 300,000 words, with both checks in a single report. I checked every price below on the vendor's own pricing page on 16 September 2026.

Originality.ai3 scans/day, 2,000 words eachPro, $12.95/month200,000 words of AI scanningYes, at double the credits

GPTZero10,000 words/monthPremium, USD price not verified300,000 words/monthNot verified by tier
TurnitinNoneInstitutional licences onlyYes

On Originality.ai, AI plus plagiarism checking uses 2 credits per 100 words, so the Pro plan's 2,000 credits cover 100,000 words of combined scanning. Copyleaks lists up to 300,000 words for about a dollar more. Leap AI and Pangram both quote Winston AI at $18 a month for 80,000 words, but I found $10 a month for 100,000 credits on Winston's live page.

I checked GPTZero's pricing page from where I sit, and it showed prices in Vietnamese đồng, so the word limits above are verified but the dollar price isn't. Pangram's January 2026 figure of $14.99 a month was for a 150,000-word plan that GPTZero no longer lists.

Which Alternative Fits Which Job

  • Agencies and publishers checking AI and plagiarism together: Copyleaks. It scored 12 of 12 in Pangram's test and bundles plagiarism into the same scan at a lower price than Originality.ai's combined rate. The Pro plan adds whole-website scans and 25 seats for $74.99 a month billed annually.
  • Bulk scanning through an API: Originality.ai or Copyleaks. Leap AI, a competitor with no reason to flatter either, calls them "the two serious options" for programmatic scanning.
  • Freelancers who hand clients a report: Winston AI. It generates shareable PDF reports and has the lowest entry price on this list, though its plagiarism checker starts on the $16 Advanced plan.
  • Teachers and schools: Turnitin if your institution already licenses it, otherwise GPTZero, which integrates with Canvas and Google Classroom. I cover its accuracy in detail in my GPTZero review.
  • Occasional free checks: Originality.ai's own free Basic plan or GPTZero's 10,000 free words a month. ZeroGPT is free but wrongly flagged 2 of 3 human texts in Pangram's test.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free alternative to Originality.ai?

GPTZero's free plan gives 10,000 words a month and scored the same as Originality.ai (7 of 9 AI texts, 3 of 3 human) in Pangram's test. Before switching, check Originality.ai's own free Basic plan, which allows 3 scans a day.

Is Copyleaks better than Originality.ai?

On Pangram's 12-sample test, yes: Copyleaks caught 9 of 9 AI texts against Originality.ai's 7 of 9, and both cleared all 3 human texts. Copyleaks also includes plagiarism checking in the same scan at no extra credit cost.

Is Originality.ai better than Turnitin?

They serve different buyers. Turnitin is sold only to institutions, so an individual cannot buy it, while Originality.ai sells to individuals and content teams. For how Turnitin's detection compares with a consumer detector, see my GPTZero vs Turnitin page.

Which Originality.ai alternative includes a plagiarism checker?

Copyleaks includes it on every paid plan, Winston AI from its $16-a-month Advanced plan, and Turnitin as its core product. Leap AI and ZeroGPT are detection-only, according to Leap AI's own comparison, and so are GPTZero's lower tiers.

Does Originality.ai have a free plan?

Yes. As of 16 September 2026, the Basic plan offers 3 scans a day of up to 2,000 words each, AI detection only, with no subscription required.
