GPTZero vs ZeroGPT
GPTZero and ZeroGPT are different companies with near-identical names. In one 12-sample test, ZeroGPT flagged 2 of 3 human texts as AI; GPTZero none.

Are GPTZero and ZeroGPT the Same Tool?
No. GPTZero and ZeroGPT are separate products built by different teams, and they behave differently enough that the same essay routinely gets two very different scores. Every source I checked agrees, including GPTZero's own write-up and the AI Overview Google serves for the query.
The confusion makes sense. Both check whether text was written by AI, both return a percentage, both use similar branding, and both rank at the top of Google for "AI detector." The names are near-anagrams of each other. Teachers and content creators regularly use one when they meant to use the other.
One of the Sources Ranking These Tools Is GPTZero Itself
Before I use any claim below, this matters. Of the four articles I found for this query, gptzero.me published one under a "GPTZero Team" byline, dated 24 February 2026. It describes ZeroGPT as "a copycat of GPTZero" and lists ZeroGPT's credibility problems at length.
The other three have their own angles. JustDone and Ryter Pro both sell products in this space, and writehuman.ai sells a humanizer while calling its piece "a neutral, source-cited guide." In practice that last one is the most rigorously cited of the four, and I use several of its figures below.
None of this makes the factual claims wrong. GPTZero's account of ZeroGPT's origins lines up with what two independent sources found separately. But a comparison written by one of the two products being compared needs flagging, and I'd rather flag it than cite it quietly.
Who Built Each One
GPTZero's founders are on the public record. Edward Tian, a Princeton senior, launched it on 1 January 2023 and co-founded the company with Alex Cui. It raised $3.5 million in seed funding in May 2023 and a $10 million Series A led by Footwork VC in June 2024. It publishes research, submits to benchmarks, and holds SOC 2 certification and FERPA compliance.
ZeroGPT's team isn't publicly identifiable. I found no published research, no founder profiles linked from the site, no funding announcements and no benchmark submissions. Attempts to trace ownership turn up a business registration in Lebanon and little else. ZeroGPT's own site describes its detection method as "DeepAnalyse Technology," a term that appears in no published literature.
ZeroGPT launched after GPTZero took off, with a similar name, similar colours and an output format that closely copies GPTZero's sentence highlighting.
Accuracy: What One Consistent Test Shows
Vendor claims are useless for this comparison. GPTZero advertises 95.7% on the RAID benchmark; ZeroGPT advertises 98%+. Both numbers come from the companies selling the products.
Pangram Labs ran both tools through the same 12 samples (nine AI-generated texts from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, plus three verified human-written texts) as part of a 30-detector comparison. That single consistent method is worth more than either marketing page.
| Detector | AI samples caught | Human samples correctly cleared | Scribbr independent test |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPTZero | 7 of 9 (78%) | 3 of 3 | 52% |
| ZeroGPT | 6 of 9 (67%) | 1 of 3 | 64% |
Read the middle column. On catching AI text, the two tools sit close: 7 of 9 against 6 of 9, and Scribbr's separate test scored ZeroGPT higher overall. On leaving human writing alone, the gap is wide. ZeroGPT flagged two of three human texts as AI-generated.
Pangram builds a competing detector and scored itself 9 of 9 and 3 of 3, which is worth knowing. It also had no reason to hand GPTZero the better result on the measure that matters.
False Positives Are the Real Difference
ZeroGPT's false positive rate runs roughly double GPTZero's in every source that measured it, and in some measurements far more. Three sources, three methods, same direction:
- Independent 2026 testing summarised by Stack Junkie puts ZeroGPT's real-world accuracy at 73.8%, with false positives on human writing around 20.5%: roughly one in five human submissions wrongly flagged.
- Ryter Pro reports GPTZero's false positive rate at approximately 10.02%.
- JustDone puts GPTZero under 5% and ZeroGPT as high as 30% on long or formal texts.
When I ran the same university assignment through both tools, GPTZero returned 3% and ZeroGPT returned 60%. Neither tool is broken. They measure different things, so never read their scores interchangeably.
Both tools share one failure. The Liang et al. (2023) Stanford study documents GPTZero's ESL false-positive problem: GPT detectors misclassified 61.3% of TOEFL essays by non-native English speakers. Choosing GPTZero reduces the false-positive risk without removing it.
Pricing
ZeroGPT's free tier is its real advantage: 15,000 characters per scan, no account required. Paid plans start around $9.99 for 100,000 characters per scan, with a $9.99 to $18.99 range depending on limits.
GPTZero's free tier runs 10,000 words per month plus five advanced scans, with paid plans from $14.99. I found five different figures for GPTZero's higher tiers, and my GPTZero review lays all five out instead of picking one.
| GPTZero | ZeroGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | 10,000 words/month + 5 advanced scans | 15,000 characters per scan, no signup |
| Paid from | $14.99/mo | $9.99/mo |
| Account required | Yes, even for free scans | No |
| Sentence-level detail | Yes, with explanations | Basic highlighting only |
ZeroGPT is cheaper and easier to reach. That money buys a tool that wrongly flagged two of three human texts under controlled testing.
Which One Should You Use?
Use GPTZero when the score influences something. A grade, a hiring decision, a client relationship, a published byline. Its lower false-positive rate carries the whole argument, and its sentence-level reporting gives you something to review instead of a bare number.
Use ZeroGPT for a free throwaway check on your own writing, where nothing rides on the answer and you want a directional read before you hit publish.
Neither is reliable enough to accuse anyone with. Weber-Wulff et al. (2023) tested 14 detectors and concluded they were "neither accurate nor reliable," and both vendors' own documentation stops short of calling a score proof. If you need something more dependable than either, GPTZero alternatives covers the detectors that scored better on the same test, and GPTZero vs Turnitin covers the institutional side.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is GPTZero better than ZeroGPT?
On the measure that causes real harm, yes. In Pangram's 12-sample test GPTZero cleared all three human texts while ZeroGPT flagged two of them as AI. On catching AI text the two sit much closer, 7 of 9 against 6 of 9.
Is GPTZero the best AI checker?
No. In Pangram's 30-tool comparison, Copyleaks caught 9 of 9 AI samples and cleared 3 of 3 human samples, the only perfect score in the set. GPTZero came in at 7 of 9.
What are the limitations of ZeroGPT?
A false positive rate reported between 20.5% and 30%, an anonymous team with no published research or benchmark submissions, accuracy that drops on longer documents, single-percentage output with no explanation, and an ad-supported free tier with unclear data handling.
Why do GPTZero and ZeroGPT give different scores on the same text?
They use different detection methods and thresholds. GPTZero combines perplexity and burstiness with a trained classifier; ZeroGPT uses what it calls "DeepAnalyse Technology," which it doesn't document publicly. Their scores measure different quantities, so don't compare them directly.
Is ZeroGPT free?
Yes, with no account required, which is its main draw: 15,000 characters per scan. Paid plans start around $9.99 per month.
