Speechify Alternatives
Two of three guides recommending Speechify alternatives come from companies selling one. What they leave out, and which tool fits each reason for leaving.

Do You Need a Speechify Alternative?
Whether you need a Speechify alternative depends on which of two things brought you here: the $139-a-year price, or a specific feature Speechify doesn't have. If it's price, several tools below do the same core job for less or for free. If it's a feature (a one-time purchase instead of a subscription, offline use, unlimited free listening), the right alternative depends on which specific gap you're closing, not on picking the single "best" one.
I cover what Speechify itself gets right and where it falls short in Speechify Review, worth reading before deciding you need something else.
Getting Speechify's Own Numbers Right First
Speechify Premium costs $139 a year, or $29 billed monthly, not $348 a year. One alternatives guide I read states the Premium plan costs "a steep $348 per year (or $139 per year if paying annually)," which mixes two different numbers into one sentence. I checked: $348 is what 12 months of the $29 monthly plan adds up to if someone never switches to annual billing. $139 is the actual annual price. Nobody pays $348 unless they specifically choose to pay monthly for a full year instead of taking the annual discount.
| Billing | Price | What it actually costs |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $29/mo | $348/year if paid monthly all year |
| Annual | $139/year | $11.58/mo equivalent |
The real gap between Speechify's cheapest and most expensive path to a year of Premium is $209, not zero. Worth knowing which number a guide is quoting before you treat $348 as "the price."
Who's Actually Recommending These Tools
Two of the three guides I read for this comparison are published by a company selling the alternative it recommends. One, published on a blog branded around the free tool ReadAloud, names ReadAloud "the best free alternative (and it's not even close)." Another, published by ElevenReader's own team, names ElevenReader the best overall free alternative. I don't think either disclosure invalidates the specific facts each guide reports (file support, free-tier limits, pricing), but it explains why each guide's overall pick happens to be the guide publisher's own product.
The Best Speechify Alternatives
Four alternatives came up across independent-enough sources for me to name specifically, each solving a different one of the reasons people leave Speechify.
NaturalReader
NaturalReader is the one alternative every source I read agrees on. It runs on web, desktop and mobile, handles a wide range of document types, and includes OCR for scanned PDFs and images. The free plan caps usage at 20,000 characters a day on its better "Premium" voices, and paid plans start around $9.99 to $20 a month depending on the source. I'd point someone here if they want Speechify's cross-platform convenience at a lower price and don't mind an account and a usage cap.
ElevenReader
ElevenReader, built by ElevenLabs, gives free users 10 hours of listening a month with access to more than 800 AI voices. That's enough for roughly a 400-page book monthly, at no cost. It supports web articles, PDFs and EPUBs, and syncs across iOS, Android and Chrome. Google's own AI Overview for "speechify alternatives" independently names ElevenReader the top pick when I searched it, which corroborates the claim beyond just the publisher's own guide. I'd point someone here if they want voice quality closer to ElevenLabs' own text-to-speech product without paying for it.

Voice Dream Reader
Voice Dream Reader is a one-time $14.99 to $9.99 purchase (my sources vary slightly on the exact figure) rather than a subscription, and it only runs on iOS and Android. It supports EPUB, DAISY and PDF formats, works fully offline once voices are downloaded, and lets you tune speed, pitch and emphasis in detail. I'd point someone here if they read primarily on a phone or tablet and would rather pay once than subscribe monthly.
Balabolka
Balabolka is a completely free, Windows-only desktop application that reads text aloud using voices already installed on the machine. It supports a wide range of file formats and exports audio as MP3 or WAV, with no account, subscription or internet connection required. Voice quality depends entirely on which Windows voices are installed, which is usually more basic than Speechify's premium tier. I'd point someone here if they're on Windows and want zero ongoing cost without needing premium voice quality.
Murf.ai Is Not a Speechify Reader Alternative
Every review blog I read for this comparison lists Murf.ai as a Speechify alternative, and none of them says clearly that Murf doesn't do what Speechify Reader does. Murf is a voiceover-creation studio: type or paste a script, assign an AI voice, adjust pitch and timing, and export a finished audio file for a video, podcast or presentation. It doesn't read a webpage aloud, sync across devices while you read on the move, or scan a physical document with your phone camera.
I make the same distinction on Speechify's own side in Speechify Review: Speechify Reader (the listening tool) and Speechify Studio (a separate voiceover-generation product) are different things under one brand. Murf.ai competes with Speechify Studio, not Speechify Reader. If you're comparing Murf against Speechify because you want a cheaper way to listen to articles, you're comparing the wrong two products. For that comparison done properly, see ElevenLabs Review.
Which Alternative Fits Which Job
| If you want... | Use |
|---|---|
| The cheapest way to keep Speechify's cross-platform convenience | NaturalReader |
| The best free voice quality available | ElevenReader |
| A one-time purchase instead of a subscription, on iOS | Voice Dream Reader |
| Zero cost, fully offline, on Windows | Balabolka |
| Professional voiceover generation (not reading) | ElevenLabs, not Murf.ai via a "Speechify alternative" list |
Where This Fits
This page sits inside AI Audio & Music Tools, alongside Speechify Review. If price turns out to be less of a problem than it first seemed once the real annual number is clear, my review covers who Speechify itself is actually right for. If the reason you're leaving is Speechify Studio specifically rather than Reader, ElevenLabs Review covers the tool three of my sources point to instead.
Speechify Alternatives FAQ
Is there a cheaper way to get Speechify?
Speechify's annual plan at $139/year is already the cheaper of its two billing options against $29 billed monthly ($348/year). Beyond that, I didn't find an official discount path in my research, beyond the student pricing I cover in Speechify Review's FAQ.
Does Speechify really read any book?
Speechify supports PDF, EPUB, DOCX and plain text files, plus scanned pages via OCR. See Speechify Review for my specific answer on Kindle-format books.
Which is better, Speechify or Peech?
None of my sources for this comparison covered Peech directly, and I don't have a sourced answer for that specific comparison yet.
Which is better, ElevenLabs or Speechify?
For reading existing text aloud, they're not really direct competitors: Speechify Reader is built for that job, and ElevenLabs is built for generating new voiceover content. For voice generation and cloning specifically, ElevenLabs is what Speechify Studio competes against, and my research consistently rates ElevenLabs ahead on raw voice quality. See ElevenLabs Review for the fuller picture.
