The Fastest Way: AI Agent

On the home screen, I found the prompt box labeled "describe your video idea": that's AI Agent, the quickest path to a finished video. Instead of picking scenes and writing a script by hand, I described the whole video in one detailed prompt covering subject, visuals, tone, and pacing. Specificity mattered here. A prompt naming exact actions, settings, and mood consistently beat a vague one-liner in my tests. I picked a public avatar from the library (filterable by age, gender, and ethnicity), set the length and orientation, and generated. AI Agent built the script, scene structure, voice, and timing from that single prompt, landing me at a full first draft in a minute or two.

Taking Control in AI Studio

I clicked "edit in AI Studio" from an AI Agent result to get hands-on control: a script panel on the left, a live preview in the center, a scene timeline at the bottom, and controls for avatar, media, music, and captions on the right. Rewriting the script took nothing more than clicking into a scene and typing. I generated backgrounds directly with HeyGen's built-in AI image model (branded "Nano Banana") by describing what I wanted instead of searching a stock library, then checked the timeline afterward to confirm the new background applied consistently across every scene I intended.

The motion engine controls how expressive the avatar's movement feels, with presets like excited, welcoming, and calm. I found HeyGen's "more expressive motion" toggle produced erratic, distracting movement in one of my own videos. I'd test it cautiously on a low-stakes clip before relying on it for anything final.

Cloning Yourself: The Consent Step

I started my digital twin under the Avatar tab, then New Avatar, then Clone a Real Person. To change the environment or styling without re-cloning, I used "New Look" from the avatar edit panel: describing a new setting or outfit, generating a few variations, and applying the one I wanted across the whole video. That changes the presentation only. Voice and underlying identity stay the same.

Translating a Video Into Another Language

HeyGen's Translate tool takes an existing video, dubs it into a chosen target language, and keeps lip sync intact, with no re-recording required. I uploaded the file, picked a language from a list spanning dozens of options, and the output preserved my original voice's character while speaking the new language.

Building an Animated Character Instead

For anyone who doesn't want to appear on camera at all, I tried "Create a Virtual Character" (under the same New Avatar menu), which builds a fully animated presenter instead of a real-person clone. I named the character, set basic demographics, wrote a description of their appearance and setting, and chose a visual style; options include stylized looks like Pixar-style rendering. I picked a voice from HeyGen's voice library, and the character was ready to use in AI Agent the same way a cloned avatar would be. Because looks can be regenerated independently of the character itself, one animated character can anchor an entire series or channel across different settings and topics.

What This Actually Costs in Credits

Video generation burns credits, and the rate depends heavily on which avatar engine does the work. On a 600-credit Creator plan, that's roughly 200 minutes of Avatar III output a month against only 30 minutes on Avatar IV. Getting an API Key, and Cancelling or Deleting Your Account

Two things most walkthroughs of the interface skip, both of which I confirmed directly against HeyGen's own help center, 2026-09-02:

API key: I went to Settings, then API, then API token inside my HeyGen account. From there I could view or regenerate the key used for programmatic access, Zapier integrations, or third-party voice tools like ElevenLabs.

Cancelling your subscription: cancelling keeps your account active until the end of the current billing cycle. You keep access through what you've already paid for, and it doesn't take effect immediately. Drop to the Free plan afterward, and unused credits don't roll over.

Deleting your account entirely: a separate, permanent action from cancelling a subscription. I went to Settings, then the Account tab, then Delete Account. It doesn't reverse the way pausing or cancelling a subscription does.
